Was Blackout 2 Almost A Thing?
Twitter user LeakyPastimes posted an apparently leaked image that shows an overview of the heavily rumored Ural Mountains battle royale map. But, here’s the kicker. The overview/UI of the image is eerily similar to the Blackout map overview/UI.
Notable dataminer Nanikos also posted the image and added this note:
“FYI: This is the cut Ural Map, this is not the one that is coming on the 22nd into Warzone.”
Last year, gaming insider Jeff Grubb reported that Blackout would somehow return in Black Ops Cold War.
Since this was shocking news, we at ModernWarzone reached out to Grubb to see if he could offer any more details on the story. Here’s what Grubb told us:
“I don’t know if it’s still accurate. When I tweeted it, I noted that it’s coming back in some way because someone at Activision noted that they were having trouble testing Blackout because of COVID. But it always made sense to me that they could’ve meant Blackout content for Warzone.”
At the time, we thought this was just in relation to Alcatraz (Rebirth Island) coming to Warzone. But now, it looks like Blackout 2 could have been in development at some point.
That’s not all. During VGC’s Off The Record podcast, the site’s editor-in-chief Andy Robinson talked about the leaked 1980s Verdansk map, how this map could be different from the current one in Warzone, and why there was no guarantee that Black Ops Cold War would integrate with Warzone.
On Twitter, Robinson also addressed the leaked map overview, saying that Blackout 2 was probably in the works for a while and plans changed.
Of course, none of this information is official and you should take it with a grain of salt. Regardless, we will probably learn more about Black Ops Cold War and Warzone Season 3 sooner rather than later. The next season is expected to start in a few weeks.
