First-Year Sales For Modern Warfare Were The Highest In Franchise History
Activision President and COO Daniel Alegre stated that Modern Warfare’s first-year sales are the highest in the franchise’s history. Alegre attributed this to Call of Duty: Warzone. People are trying out the free-to-play battle royale and buying the full game after the fact.
Alegre also said that two-thirds of the game’s total sales were digital, which isn’t too much of a surprise considering the COVID-19 pandemic.
Finally, console and PC engagement for the 2019 Call of Duty title have tremendously improved. Here’s what Alegre said about PC sales:
“The combination of premium Modern Warfare content and the free-to-play Warzone experience on PC and console continues to expand the community and drive deep engagement. Modern Warfare and Warzone saw more than 3 times many monthly players as the prior title in the year-ago quarter, with strong growth both inside and outside our traditional regions. Console player numbers grew strongly, and monthly players grew over tenfold year over year on PC. Across platforms, hours played in the Modern Warfare universe, where approximately 7 times higher year over year versus the prior title.”
In total, Activision reported over $1.2 billion in revenue from microtransactions across all of its titles. Modern Warfare and Warzone are doing just fine as well. Compared to Q3 2019, there are 3 times as many monthly active users (MAU) across the game.
