The Call of Duty community has recently made it very clear that they would like to see prestige mode make a return to the franchise. Modern Warfare was the first game in the Call of Duty franchise to not have prestige mode as an option for players. We previously reported that it looked highly unlikely that Black Ops Cold War would have prestige mode, but since then a few things have happened. Let’s take a look.

Prestige Mode Gaining Momentum

Since we originally reported that prestige looked highly unlikely to be a feature in the upcoming Call of Duty title Black Ops Cold War, several things have changed. First and foremost, after many large websites covered this story, the Call of Duty community made it very clear that they were unhappy with this. Players want an incentive to continue to “grind” each new Call of Duty title.

Modern Warfare currently has a seasonal rank system that resets at the start of each new season. Players start at level 55, and rework their way back to level 155. Upon reaching this max level they are usually rewarded with a weapon that is exclusive to players who maxed out for that season. However many think that this is simply not enough of an incentive to grind, and is far too easy to reach with all of the double xp weekend and tokens we have available to use.

The movement really started to gain momentum when Charlie Intel tweeted out a poll asking players if they wanted to see a prestige or seasonal rank system in the new Call of Duty title. It was a landslide victory for Prestige mode, after more than 139,000 votes.

Prestige Mode In Black Ops Cold War Alpha

The Black Ops Cold War alpha took place on Playstation 4 from September 18-September 20th. While it originally appeared that all players would be locked to level 1, users quickly realized that a bug was allowing them to see their “level” in the game’s menu lobby! DoomBoyReid on twitter and twitch made it clear to me that his goal was to reach max level to see what would happen. Low and behold, a prestige icon appeared.

It’s obviously worth noting that this is clearly a bug, but it shows us some very important information. Black Ops Cold War has been coded to allow for a prestige system to exist, as these  assets would not just appear in game if they were “old code.” Which to clear things up, they clearly are old prestige icons from Black Ops 4, the one in question is the 1st prestige emblem. However, we previously heard through our sources that Black Ops Cold War had no plans of adding prestige to their game, as the seasonal ranking system clearly worked financially for Modern Warfare.

This isn’t the only example of prestige mode being in Black Ops Cold War, another user showed us (at some point, can’t seem to find it now) another prestige emblem in the Cold War Alpha. This obviously will be tested again when the beta releases, but for now all we can do is hope that Treyarch and Activision have changed their minds.
