Are Blackout Elements coming to Warzone?

Earlier in June, VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb reported that Blackout would be making a return in some form with the new upcoming Call of Duty Black Ops title. Since then, there has been no further information or leaks to verify this info.

We reached out to Jeff to see if he could offer any more details on his previous report, and whether or not that information was still accurate.

Here’s what Jeff Grubbs had to say:

I don’t know if it’s still accurate. When I tweeted it, I noted that it’s coming back in some way because someone at Activision noted that they were having trouble testing Blackout because of COVID. But it always made sense to me that they could’ve meant Blackout content for Warzone.”

However, after our first questions were answered by Jeff, Alcatraz was found in the game files for Warzone. If you’re unaware of what Alcatraz is, here’s a quick rundown.

  • Alcatraz was the second and final Blackout Map.
  • Set around the prison on Alcatraz Island, previously seen on Mob of the Dead and its remake/sequel, Blood of the Dead.
  • Portal Quads was the only mode available.
  • Features 10 squads of 4 players deployed through randomly spawned portals.
  • Players can be redeployed at the end of a wave and redeploy up until the final circle.
  • The map features weapon wall buys where new weapons are guaranteed every 30 seconds.

We decided to ask Jeff if anything about his statement had changed since hearing of the rumored return of Alcatraz in Warzone. Here’s what he had to say:

“Alcatraz seems right in line with what we heard. They’ve been testing this Blackout content for Warzone for a while, and now it seems all but confirmed.”

Based upon the current rumors, as well as the corroboration from Jeff in this interview, we can safely assume that Alcatraz will somehow make a return to Call of Duty via Warzone. The only questions that remain now are when, why, and how?

TheGamingRevolution went over all this in a recent video, which can be seen down below:

We will update you with more information as it becomes available. We want to make sure to thank Jeff Grubb for his time and quick response, as well as his continued work in the insider gaming community.
